Whalen starred at the University of Minnesota before Connecticut drafted her, and after five seasons with the Sun she was traded home to the Lynx. She became the floor general for a Minnesota dynasty, winning four championships (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017) and retiring with the fourth-most assists in WNBA history. She was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.
