Thompson has the distinction of being the very first player ever drafted into the WNBA, taken No. 1 overall by Houston in 1997. She started at forward for the Comets' dynasty, winning all four of the league's first four championships alongside Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes, and retired as the WNBA's second-leading scorer of all time. She was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
